What the PTS course includes

Your first step to a career on the railway.

Delivered through a combination of eLearning and practical training, the course gives learners the knowledge, awareness, and confidence to work safely in a live rail environment — understanding the hazards, controls, and safety protocols required to protect themselves and others.

Employers will require a valid PTS competency before offering any role within trackside or rail operations.

Course Overview

eLearning

Before attending the in-person course, learners complete six online training modules and an online knowledge assessment.

You’ll have flexible access to multiple learning formats:

  • Interactive bite-sized eLearning modules
  • Downloadable PDF study guides
  • Audio learning to accompany visual content
  • Optional support resources including podcasts, videos, and reference materials

Once you’ve successfully passed the online assessment, you can book your practical training day.

Practical Course

The one-day practical session reinforces knowledge through hands-on exercises and applied learning.

You’ll develop the skills to work safely, identify risks, and follow Network Rail safety procedures.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to the railway system: key components such as tracks, trains, signals, and crossings
  • Hazards and risks: recognising dangers like moving trains and electrical hazards
  • Safety procedures: correct use of PPE, safe systems of work, and communication protocols
  • Access and egress: how to safely access and leave railway worksites
  • Working on or near the track: safe working practices and handling of tools and materials
  • Emergency procedures: what to do in incidents such as derailments or electrical faults

Throughout the course, delegates complete a verification test and final theory assessment to confirm understanding.

Upon successful completion, candidates receive their PTS certification, valid for two years.

Recertification

Your PTS competency must be renewed every two years via a one-day PTS Recertification course, which must be completed within 56 days of expiry to remain valid.

Entry Requirements

Before enrolling, candidates must:

  • Have a rail industry sponsor (a rail employer or recruitment provider)
  • Pass a Network Rail-approved medical examination
  • Pass a drugs and alcohol screening

Important: Failing a drugs and alcohol test results in an automatic 5-year ban from working on any Network Rail infrastructure.

Who Should Attend

This course is suitable for:

  • Anyone starting a career within the railway industry
  • Individuals seeking trackside access or roles under Network Rail control
  • Employees or contractors requiring PTS competency for compliance
